Case Study: Flood Mitigation of the Muda River, Malaysia
نویسندگان
چکیده
The 2003 flood of the Muda River reached 1,340 m3 /s at Ladang Victoria and adversely impacted 45,000 people in Malaysia. A flood control remediation plan proposed a levee height based on a 50-year discharge of 1 ,815 m3 /s obtained from hydrologic models. This design discharge falls outside the 95% confidence intervals of the flood frequency analysis based on field measurements. Instream sand and gravel mining operations also caused excessive riverbed degradation, which largely off sets apparent benefits for flood control. Pumping stations have been systematically required at irrigation canal intakes. Several bridge piers have also been severely undermined and emergency abutment protection works were needed in several places. Instream sand and gravel mining activities should be replaced with offstream mining in the future. Like many other countries, reservoirs in Malaysia are primarily built for various functions such as hydroelectric power generation, drinking water supply, flood mitigation and irrigation for agricultural purposes. Artisanal fisheries activities were also performed in these reservoirs. The freshwater fish are a requisite source of protein for the rural population. Consequently, the fish resource...

Past decades damage by floods in Iran and on the other of the world has shown that we have still much work to do to cope with this problem. Hence, the study of these events and development of more effective adaptation and mitigation policies has become a priority, in other parts of the globe. First step in achieving flood risk assessment is data collection. Availability, suitability and quality...

This article reviews some of the recent advances in the analysis of extreme flood events in Malaysia. First, a detailed analysis of daily rainfall precipitation measurements leads to new understanding regarding Malaysian monsoons: the conditional probability of rainfall steadily increases as a function of the number of successive rainy days. The probability of multi-day rainfall events has also...
